Fish anyone?

She got out of work at around 8.06pm and she walked towards La Trobe St tram stop. While waiting for North Coburg tram, a homeless person walked pass and immediately she thought, “Stay calm. Don’t stare. And everything will be fine. Ughh. Sure hope he wouldn’t cause any problem”. Four years. She still couldn’t help but being jumpy and nervous everytime a homeless person is in close proximity with her. Not sure why. He was talking non stop. She couldn’t make up what he was saying and it was getting pretty annoying. She wondered if everyone felt the same way or was it just her. She peeked at the tram’s digital timetable. “3 more minutes” and she could see that the tram is approaching “hmm..hopefully he’s not gonna get into this tram” she thought selfishly to herself. He looked at the approaching tram and decided to walk away. Suddenly, he changed his mind and bent down to collect some cigarette buds laying around right in the middle of the tram tracks. Everybody else was looking and shouting at him to move away from the track. Of all the commuters, she was the closest to him. Yet she did nothing. “Attention seeker.”, she thought. As the tram got closer, everybody else kept on shouting at him except for this one Asian guy who was standing the farthest away from the homeless guy. He was running towards him trying to warn him thinking that maybe the homeless guy couldn’t hear the shouting. As he touched him, the homeless guy immediately got defensive.

“What the f*** is your problem man?”

“The tram is coming and everyone was shouting..”

“Why the f*** are you touching me? Can’t you mind your own business?”

“Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

“So what if I was? Is it gonna be YOUR problem? I don’t think so. So stay the f*** away!”

The Asian guy was clearly humiliated because he didn’t know how to react or even what he could say to defend himself. A Caucasian woman approached him and said “It’s okay. Everybody else saw what you were trying to do. Just ignore him.”

So there. If you were in this situation, what would you do?

Which would you rather be?

The selfish girl who just got back from work and was thinking all about herself?

The Asian guy who tried to help but got humiliated instead?

or everybody else who just couldn’t be bothered?

Is it wrong to be selfish? If by being selfish, we could save ourselves from unnecessary humiliation?

But is it right to be selfish? When knowing that by not being selfish, we COULD save other people’s lives?

And if someone decided to be self-centered, self-absorbed or self-serving, can we judge them?
